"Dare to Experience" Seghahunda!
Pronounced (Say-ga-hunda)

WHY “SEHGAHUNDA”? WHY LETCHWORTH STATE PARK?

The Sehgahunda Valley (“Vale of Three Falls”), which encompasses the portion of the Genesee River Valley, was comprised of several villages settled by the Seneca People. The locations of these villages make up the current boundaries of Letchworth State Park.

Letchworth State Park spans over 14,000 acres, with miles and miles of trails - all with varying degrees of technicality to challenge both experienced runners and casual hikers. Many of the trails that make up this race are the very trails used by the Seneca Indians to access the Genesee River, which bisects this valley, giving rise to its nickname “The Grand Canyon of the East.”

We dare you to experience the beauty, history, and challenge of this unique event!

Course Map (North Section)    Course Map (South Section)

Leg #1 - 6.1 miles
Leg #2 - 9.3 miles
Leg #3 - 6.5 miles
Leg #4 - 4.4 miles

The course starts at the Mount Morris Dam Visitor Center, and runs along the Finger Lakes Trail, taking in some of the best views Western NY has to offer, eventually winding it's way down to the finish area at the Parade Grounds in Portageville. It has:

  • Over 100 gullies to descend and climb
  • Lots of rocks, roots, ruts, leaves, and gullies to manuever over, under, and around
  • Short climbs, long climbs, very few flats
  • Between 3,000 and 4,000 feet of climbing
  • There are 8 check points/aid stations along the route
  • Water, hydration, ice, gels, watermelon, oranges, chips, pretzels, flat cola, and PB&J will be available at all check points/aid stations.
  • Red Bull will be located at CP# 3, CP# 6, CP# 7 and CP# 8
  • The main trail that you will be running (The FLT) is marked with yellow blazes
  • Most trails heading out to the check points are marked with blue blazes
  • All turns from the main trail onto the check point trails and from the check point trails back onto the main trail will be marked with arrows and small flags

A MapMyRun course map can be found here.
Note: this is not an official map, just one taken from a GPS watch which can be inaccurate over the long distances, sharp turns, and steep inclines.

Course Preview Runs

Preview Runs begin at 9AM at the beginning of the leg being previewed on River Rd. All legs have the option to do an “out and back” or one way (we will have chauffeur service for the one-way folks).
If you want to carpool meet at Fleet Feet Sports at the Armory by 7:30AM. The caravan leaves at 7:45AM

Big thank you to the Fleet Feet Sports Endurance Team for all of your help with the preview runs!

Leg 1- Sunday, March 20
Run #1 will begin at Mount Morris Dam. Distance is 6.1 miles. There is parking at the dam.

Leg 2 - Saturday, April 9
We’re meeting at Relay Checkpoint 1 on River Road, between Nunda Rd & Ridge Rd. It’s a bit hard to find if you’re just driving by, but the team & associated cars will be there. This leg is approximately 9.3 Miles. No parking lot, just next-to-road parking.

Leg 3- Sunday, May 1
START at Checkpoint 3 (Relay #2) - where the "out" portion of Preview Run #2 finished. Meet on River Road between Picket Line Rd. and Crossover Rd. There is a blue-blazed trail-head marked #22. Look for the team & associated cars. It's a bit hard to find if you're just driving by, but the team & associated cars will be there. This leg is approximately 6.5 Miles long. No parking lot, just next-to-rd parking.

Parking Request: When driving down River Road just before you get to CP# 3 turn left on Picket Line Road, then take your first right onto Crossover Road which is a small dirt road. Park on the right hand (north) side of Crossover near the intersection of River road. It is then about a 400 meter walk to CP#3.
I ask this of you all as this will be the new protocol on race day for all parking at CP#3 at the requirement of the NY State Park Police. River Road at CP#3 is narrow and this will keep everyone from standing in the middle of the road and playing dodge with cars.

Leg 4 - Saturday, May 14
NEW - Start at Parade Grounds (in Portageville, at the finish), running back to Aide Station 6/Relay Exchange 3 at the intersection of River Rd & Dygert Rd (All parking is at the Parade Grounds). Mix of trails & dirt road – 4.4 miles one way.
